The social media giant has agreed to pay a large sum to settle a lawsuit filed by the US President.
Meta will be paying $22 million to Trump’s presidential library. The remaining $3 million will be legal fees to address the lawsuit challenging his Facebook and Instagram account suspensions.
In 2021, Donald Trump slammed a lawsuit against Meta and its chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, regarding his account suspension after the 6th Jan Capitol riots. It held Meta responsible for violating his rights by suspending his accounts. The allegations pointed out a possible collusion with Democratic lawmakers to silence him.
For several years, Donald Trump has been criticizing Zuckerberg and Facebook, calling the social media channel anti-Trump in 2017.
In July 2024, Meta released the final restrictions on Trump’s social media accounts leading up to his presidential elections. A month later, Meta donated $1M to an inauguration fund for the US president, where Zuckerberg was a guest. With a large sum, Meta has attempted to make peace with Donald Trump, but whether or not this will change the President’s take on Meta and Facebook is what the future will unfold.
