As DeepSeek sparks curiosity and gains popularity, South Korea’s data protection authority suspends the new downloads of the Chinese AI app.
This move was taken on the grounds of Non-compliance with privacy laws.
The app’s service is to resume after introducing improvements in the country’s privacy law.
Authorities are yet to review DeepSeek’s data processing practices. DeepSeek’s suspension follows international concerns over its privacy policy and how it manages user data.
What followed the action to halt DeepSeek downloads- foreign and defense ministries blocked internal access to the service.
To overcome this restriction, the Chinese startup appointed legal representatives in South Korea and acknowledged it.
And although the DeepSeek app is no longer available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play, users who already installed it can still use the tool, but with caution.
The Chinese government places a lot of importance on data privacy, and their app being blocked due to security concerns is quite surprising. Perhaps this is temporary until the regulators find DeepSeek’s data privacy reliable.
